LOCAL OBSERVATIONS 2008 - January

Wednesday 9th January 2008

Conditions: Cloudy, no wind.
Temperature : around 12 to 14 C
Time of observations: 20h00 to 20h30

Driving back from Estagel at 20h and sighted a toad crossing the road, so I told my father to stop the car and I got out and caught it, it was a Natterjack toad (Bufo calamita). In fact for the last few days I have seen these toads crossing the roads, there was another dead not far from this first specimen.
When I got back home I went out to have a quick survey of the roads, and indeed found another specimen, slightly smaller and lighter in colour. It has rained on and off for the past week or so and you feel that all the rain has soaked into the ground and now, the next rain storm will flood out the fields and the same scenes from 2006 will occur (Bufo calamita & Hyla meridionalis high numbers in flooded fields - 2006).
